| Obverse description | The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield divided into three sections charged with a key, a royal palm, and horizontal stripes symbolizing the sea between Cuba and its neighbors, surmounted by a Phrygian cap on a pole above a rising sun. Cuba's Olympic commemorative program of the early 1980s was prolific almost to the point of cynicism — the government issued coins honoring Games it could not attend. Cuba boycotted the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics in solidarity with the Soviet bloc, yet produced coins for both Los Angeles and the Sarajevo Winter Games regardless, targeting the international collector market as a foreign currency earner rather than marking any athletic participation.
The Sarajevo series was struck in 1983, a full year before the February 1984 Games opened in Yugoslavia.
