The 1988 Dominican piedfort commemorates the quincentennial buildup to 1992, when Spain, Latin America, and the United States mounted competing celebrations of Columbus's 1492 voyage — a politically charged anniversary that generated an unusual volume of commemorative coinage across dozens of issuing nations simultaneously. The Dominican Republic's participation carried particular geographic weight: La Española, the island Columbus first colonized, lies within modern Dominican territory, and the colonial capital Santo Domingo was the administrative seat of early Spanish America.
Piedforts at double the standard planchet thickness were a format revived by the French Monnaie de Paris in the 1970s and rapidly adopted by proof programs worldwide through the 1980s. KM#P28 is the piedfort companion to the standard proof issue of the same year.
