Cuba issued commemorative peso pieces in copper alongside silver versions for domestic and collector markets — the copper strikes like this KM#908a were the more accessible tier, intended for circulation-adjacent use rather than export numismatic sales. The Castro commemorative series emerged from a period when the Cuban government was actively producing collector coinage as a modest hard-currency revenue stream, a practice that accelerated after the Soviet subsidies collapsed in the early 1990s and Havana needed alternative income sources.
