Additional information

Cuba issued commemorative peso pieces in copper alongside silver versions for domestic and collector markets — the copper strikes like this KM#908a were the more accessible tier, intended for circulation-adjacent use rather than export numismatic sales. The Castro commemorative series emerged from a period when the Cuban government was actively producing collector coinage as a modest hard-currency revenue stream, a practice that accelerated after the Soviet subsidies collapsed in the early 1990s and Havana needed alternative income sources.

Raúl had formally assumed the presidency from Fidel in February 2008, making this 2009 issue one of the earliest struck under his official tenure.
