Rafael Carrera ruled Guatemala from 1844 until his death in 1865, and this peso series was struck in the years immediately following — issued under the conservative governments that maintained his political order after he was gone. Guatemala's mint at Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción had limited refining capacity during this period, which accounts for the slightly substandard fineness relative to contemporary Spanish-American coinage.
