Additional information

Piet Heyn's 1628 capture of the Spanish silver fleet in Matanzas Bay — the only truly successful seizure of an entire treasure convoy in the history of the Caribbean — netted the Dutch West India Company roughly 11.5 million guilders and briefly crippled Spanish colonial finance. The raid took place in Cuban waters, which gives Cuba a plausible geographic claim to commemorating him, though Heyn sailed under the Dutch flag and died two years later fighting Flemish pirates in the North Sea.
