Pattern coinage from the Casa de Moneda de México rarely surfaces in trade, and the Morelos series trials of the early 1980s are no exception. By 1983, Mexico was months away from one of the worst debt crises in its history — the August 1982 default had already forced emergency peso devaluations, and the mint was actively testing cheaper alloys as silver and cupronickel costs became untenable against a collapsing currency. Stainless steel was the logical candidate.
KM#Pn228 never reached circulation. The production 1 Peso that survived into 1983 was already economically irrelevant at face value.
