The Caballito peso — designed by French sculptor Charles Pillet — was produced in Paris following a competition organized by the Mexican government under Porfirio Díaz. The 1909 patterns differ meaningfully from the circulation strikes that followed in 1910: this raised-letter edge variant, catalogued as PL#03B, is one of several edge trials produced to evaluate lettering methods before the type entered production. The raised format was ultimately rejected in favor of an incuse edge on the issued coinage.
