| Obverse description | The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the central field, featuring the traditional escutcheon with a key, two promontories, and a rising sun, surmounted by the Phrygian cap and flanked by an oak branch and a laurel branch. The country name 'REPUBLICA DE CUBA' arcs along the upper legend, while the face value '1 PESO' appears in the lower legend. Two five-pointed stars are positioned on either side of the denomination, serving as decorative separators between the inscription elements. |

| Additional information |
Cuba issued a long series of commemorative pesos through the 1980s targeting the international collector market — hard currency was desperately needed, and CUBACOIN, the state export agency, marketed these aggressively abroad while they saw virtually no domestic circulation. The National Ballet issue honors the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, founded by Alicia Alonso in 1948, who continued directing the company despite being nearly blind for most of her career.
