The Banco de la Provincia de Buenos Aires — then operating as the Banco de Descuentos — was established in 1822 as the first bank in the Río de la Plata region, making this 1823 issue among the earliest formal banknotes circulated in what would become Argentina. The "metálico" designation was not decorative: it pledged redemption in hard coin at a moment when the public had every reason to doubt that promise.
The official stamp served as the primary authentication device because the printing infrastructure in Buenos Aires at the time was too limited for sophisticated intaglio security work. Within a decade, convertibility was suspended and never fully restored under this institution.
