Sonora's state treasury — not a bank — issued this note under the authority of the Jefatura de Hacienda during the acute coin shortage that gripped northern Mexico in 1914. The Constitutionalist movement had fragmented monetary authority across dozens of regional issuers, and Sonora, then under Governor José María Maytorena, was printing its own emergency paper alongside several competing revolutionary factions doing the same.

Printed locally in Guaymas, the note reflects the improvised infrastructure of wartime issue — production quality varies considerably across the series, and ink strike inconsistencies are common rather than exceptional.
