Cuba's Olympic commemorative program of the late 1980s and early 1990s was prolific to the point of self-defeating — dozens of types were issued in rapid succession, flooding collector markets and depressing secondary values across the entire series. This piece targets the 1992 Barcelona Games, for which Cuba fielded one of its strongest athletics delegations, though the regime's ongoing tensions with the IOC over amateurism rules had defined its Olympic participation since the 1970s.
Copper-nickel examples like this one were the mass-market tier, paired with silver proofs sold to Western dealers through Cimex and similar state export channels.
