Obverse description The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield divided into three sections: the upper portion showing a golden key between two rocky promontories and the rising sun, the lower left quadrant bearing horizontal blue and white stripes representing the sea, and the lower right quadrant featuring a royal palm tree against a mountainous landscape. The shield is surmounted by a Phrygian cap atop a pole, symbolising liberty, and is flanked by sprays of oak on the left and laurel on the right, tied at the base. The curved legend 'REPUBLICA DE CUBA' arcs along the upper rim, with the denomination '1 PESO' inscribed at the base, and two five-pointed stars flank the wreath at mid-field. The entire design is encircled by a decorative rope-pattern inner border.

Reverse description A bold left-facing portrait bust of Hatuey, the legendary Taíno chieftain and resistance leader, dominates the central field, rendered in high relief with fine detail on his hair and facial features. He is depicted bare-shouldered, his hair swept back and partially covered by a traditional headdress. The date '1991' appears in the field to the right of the portrait, with a small mintmark above it. The legend 'V CENTENARIO' curves along the upper rim, while '1492' and '1991' are inscribed vertically along the right border. The name 'HATUEY' is engraved in bold lettering at the base, above a decorative pre-Columbian stepped-fret pattern border that encircles the lower and lateral portions of the design.
