Obverse description The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield divided into three sections: the upper portion shows a golden key between two rocks and the rising sun over the sea, the lower-left section bears blue and white diagonal stripes representing the original departments of Cuba, and the lower-right section displays a royal palm tree. The shield is surmounted by a Phrygian cap on a staff and flanked by a wreath of oak leaves to the left and laurel to the right, bound at the base. The legend REPUBLICA DE CUBA arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin capitals, while the denomination 1 PESO appears in the lower field.
