Obverse description The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield with a key, rising sun, and royal palm, supported by an oak branch and laurel wreath, surmounted by a Phrygian cap on a pole. The curved legend 'REPUBLICA DE CUBA' arcs along the upper periphery, with the denomination '1 PESO' positioned at the base. Two five-pointed stars flank the central design at the left and right sides of the field.

Part of Cuba's broader commemorative program of the late 1980s, this peso was issued during a period when the Cuban government was producing hard-currency collector coins at volume — largely to generate foreign exchange as Soviet subsidies began their final contraction. Domestic circulation was never the point.
