This coin belongs to a series issued to commemorate figures of the Cuban Revolution at a moment when the Soviet subsidy keeping the Cuban economy afloat was approaching collapse — Gorbachev had already signaled that preferential trade terms would not survive perestroika. Camilo Cienfuegos disappeared in October 1959, his light aircraft lost over the sea less than three months after the revolution's triumph, under circumstances that have never been fully explained.
