The State of Morelos issued silver pesos under Zapata's Ejército Libertador del Sur as a deliberate assertion of economic independence from Carranza's Constitutionalist government, which Zapatistas refused to recognize. Production was erratic — the movement lacked consistent access to minting infrastructure — and output across 1915 and 1916 was never systematically recorded. KM#708 specimens show significant variation in planchet quality and strike consistency, reflecting improvised fabrication rather than any centralized mint operation.
