The legend DEFENDER AND LIBERATOR arcs along the upper periphery, while OF THE PHILIPPINES curves along the lower border. The inscription GEN. DOUGLAS MACARTHUR is incused in two lines to the left and right of the portrait in the central field. The commemorative date OCT. 20. 1944, marking the general's return to the Philippines at Leyte Gulf, appears in the lower exergue, with the engraver's initials L.G.F. also visible near the truncation. |
