| Obverse description | The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield divided into three sections: the upper portion features a golden key between two rocky promontories against a blue sea, the lower left shows a sun rising over a landscape, and the lower right bears a royal palm tree. The shield is surmounted by a Phrygian cap set upon a fasces, and is flanked by laurel and oak branches tied at the base. Cuba's so-called "convertible peso" series of the early 2000s was produced not for domestic circulation but primarily as a hard-currency collectible targeting foreign buyers and the island's tourist economy. The tobacco-themed issues appeared as the state tobacco monopoly, Habanos S.A. — jointly owned with Altadis — was aggressively marketing Cuban cigars internationally despite the ongoing U.S. embargo. These coins functioned more as branded merchandise than as circulating currency.
