Additional information

Cuba issued a series of collector-oriented "convertible peso" pieces in the early 2000s targeting the tourist economy, which ran a dual-currency system — the standard Cuban peso for nationals, the convertible peso (CUC) for foreigners — until its abolition in 2021. This tobacco-themed piece belongs to that collector circulation, not the domestic one.

Cuban tobacco's international reputation was already a political instrument by 2005; U.S. embargo restrictions made Habanos S.A. cigars actively contraband for American buyers, which only amplified their cachet everywhere else.
