Obverse description The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield divided into three quarters: the upper portion showing a golden key between two rocky promontories and a rising sun, the lower-left quarter bearing a blue-and-white striped field representing the original Cuban provinces, and the lower-right quarter displaying a royal palm tree against a mountainous landscape. The shield is surmounted by a Phrygian cap on a staff, symbolizing liberty, and is flanked on either side by laurel and oak branches tied at the base. Two five-pointed stars appear in the lower field, one to each side. The curved legend REPUBLICA DE CUBA arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 1 PESO is inscribed along the lower rim.

Reverse description The reverse depicts a Taíno indigenous figure in left profile, shown from the waist up and holding a large tobacco leaf or cigar to the lips, evoking the pre-Columbian origins of tobacco cultivation in Cuba. Surrounding the figure is a lush arrangement of tobacco plants with broad, detailed leaves filling the lower field. To the right of the figure, a parrot perches on a branch amid foliage, while above and behind the figure a stylized skull or mask motif appears in the upper field. The curved legend TABACO CUBANO arcs along the upper periphery, the date 1989 is incused vertically along the left inner rim, and the inscription DESDE 1492 appears along the lower field, commemorating the discovery of tobacco by Europeans upon Columbus's arrival.
