Obverse description The obverse displays the standard Mexican Republic cap-and-rays type design serving as the host coin, featuring the Phrygian cap radiating rays at center, flanked by a balance scale to the left and a scroll inscribed LEY below, with broken chains to the right. The legend UN PESO PL.A and the fineness .902.7 appear along the lower periphery. Prominently applied over the left field is the Cuban key countermark — a raised, incuse key design — officially applied between 1872 and 1877 to authorize the host coin for circulation in Cuba. The inscription LIBERTAD appears on a ribbon across the cap.
