Issued as part of Cuba's extensive "Che Guevara" commemorative program of the 1990s, this piece appeared in 1997 — the thirtieth anniversary of Guevara's execution in Bolivia. The Cuban state used the occasion aggressively, producing numerous collector issues for the hard-currency tourist market rather than domestic circulation, as ordinary Cubans were operating under the peso convertible system that kept foreign-exchange coins entirely separate from daily economic life.
