Obverse description The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield divided into three sections: the upper portion shows a rising sun over a seascape with the key of the Gulf of Mexico, the lower-left section bears alternating blue and white diagonal stripes representing the original Cuban departments, and the lower-right section displays a royal palm tree on a mountainous landscape. The shield is surmounted by a Phrygian cap atop a fasces, symbolizing liberty and strength. Flanking the shield are branches of oak on the left and laurel on the right, tied at the base, with a five-pointed star at each lower corner. The circumferential legend reads REPUBLICA DE CUBA arcing across the upper field, and UN PESO along the lower field, all within a beaded border.
