Cuba's "Birthplace" peso series, issued for convertible tourist circulation rather than domestic use, occupied a parallel economy that ran alongside the standard Cuban peso throughout the Special Period and into the 2000s. These convertible pesos were legal tender in dollar-only shops inaccessible to ordinary Cubans — an arrangement that formalized a two-tier economy and generated hard currency for the state. Simón Bolívar's inclusion reflects Cuba's longstanding ideological alignment with pan-Latin American revolutionary identity.
KM#845 is one of several designs in the series sharing the same physical specifications, struck to collector and tourist standards rather than for active circulation wear.
