| Obverse description | The Cuban national coat of arms is prominently featured in the center of the obverse, depicting a shield divided into three quarters: the upper portion shows a golden key between two rocks and the open sea, the lower-left quarter bears the blue-and-white horizontal stripes of the Cuban flag, and the lower-right quarter displays a royal palm tree. The shield is surmounted by a Phrygian cap atop a fasces, and flanked by an oak branch to the left and a laurel branch to the right, both bound at the base. The curved legend REPUBLICA DE CUBA arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 1 PESO is inscribed in large letters along the lower field. |

| Reverse description | The reverse features a portrait medallion of Alexander von Humboldt set within a beaded oval frame to the left, depicting the naturalist in three-quarter view facing right, wearing early 19th-century attire. To the right of the medallion, an eagle with spread wings is rendered in high relief against a radiant background, evoking the explorer's scientific expeditions to the Americas. The curved legend ALEJANDRO DE HUMBOLDT arcs along the upper right periphery, with the commemorative dates 1769 and 1989 flanking the inscription to denote the bicentennial of his birth. The year 1989 appears again in the lower exergue along the beaded border, and the entire design is enclosed within a fine beaded inner circle. |
