Additional information

Cuba's convertible peso series of the early 1990s was issued primarily for tourist circulation, part of a dual-currency system the government formalized as dollar shortages worsened following the Soviet collapse. The Alcala Gate piece belongs to a run of commemorative-style coins that circulated almost exclusively in hard-currency shops — rarely, if ever, passing through ordinary Cuban hands.

The Nickel Bonded Steel composition reflects the material constraints of the período especial, when raw commodity imports collapsed and traditional coinage alloys became difficult to source.
