Cuba's late-1980s commemorative peso program was one of the most prolific in the world — the state mint churned out hundreds of thematic collector issues through this period, targeting the hard-currency export market rather than domestic circulation. Most Cubans never handled these coins; they were sold through Cubacoin to foreign dealers and collectors for dollars the revolution badly needed.
The 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy provided the thematic hook for several issues across this run.
