Obverse description Right-facing portrait bust of José Gervasio Artigas, the national hero and founding father of Uruguay, rendered in low relief. The legend 'REPÚBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY' arcs around the upper periphery, while the date '1965' appears in the lower exergual area. The mintmark 'So' (Casa de Moneda de Chile, Santiago) is incorporated into the obverse field. The portrait is unadorned and presented in a classical, restrained style consistent with mid-twentieth-century Latin American coinage.
