Banco Provincial de Entre Ríos was one of the provincial banks operating under Argentina's pre-1890 decentralized monetary arrangement, in which individual provinces retained the authority to issue their own paper currency. That system collapsed spectacularly with the Baring Crisis of 1890, which triggered a cascading bank failure across Argentina and ended most provincial note issuance. This note, dated 1888, was circulating in the window immediately before that catastrophe.
Bradbury, Wilkinson produced the plates in London — routine work for a firm that handled security printing across Latin America throughout the nineteenth century. The Entre Ríos provincial issues are sparsely documented in the literature, and surviving examples in any grade are infrequently offered.
