Banco Provincial de Mendoza was one of several Argentine provincial banks operating under the 1887 Banking Law, which briefly allowed provinces to issue their own currency backed by national bonds. The system collapsed within three years — the Baring Crisis of 1890 and the subsequent financial panic forced the federal government to liquidate most provincial banks, and Mendoza's was among them. Notes from this series had an extremely short window of legitimate circulation.
Bradbury, Wilkinson's engraved work for South American provincial issuers of this period is consistently fine, which makes survivors worth examining closely for impression quality.
