Banco Provincial de Entre-Ríos was one of several Argentine provincial banks operating under the loose monetary framework that preceded the 1890 Baring Crisis. That crisis — triggered by sovereign debt collapse and Buenos Aires bank failures — wiped out most provincial paper circulation, and Entre-Ríos was no exception. Notes from this institution rarely survived the subsequent currency consolidation under the Caja de Conversión.
The American Bank Note Company engraving is characteristically fine for the period, produced at their Maiden Lane facility in New York. ABNC held near-exclusive dominance over South American government and provincial bank contracts through the 1880s.
