Vilches is a small municipality in the Sierra Morena foothills, and like hundreds of Spanish towns it was forced to produce its own emergency fractional currency during the Civil War after the Republican government's decree of June 1937 failed to adequately supply small change to local economies. These municipal issues — collectively known as "billetes locales" or "moneda fiduciaria local" — were produced under desperate improvised conditions, often stamped on whatever paper stock was available.
The Gari Monetary catalog listing remains incomplete for this issue, which is telling. Many Vilches pieces are known only from single surviving examples, and attribution of specific emission dates or authorized quantities is rarely possible.
