Vilajuïga is a small municipality in Alt Empordà, Girona, and this 1 Peseta note is one of the hundreds of locally issued emergency fractional currencies — moneda local — that flooded Catalonia and much of Republican Spain after July 1936, when the hoarding of coin left ordinary commercial transactions nearly impossible. The Consell Municipal, like counterparts in villages across the region, filled the gap with whatever printing infrastructure was at hand.

Imprenta Trayter in nearby Figueres handled production for several Alt Empordà municipalities during this period, which gives the series a regional consistency in paper weight and typographic style. Turró catalogs this as #2786.
