Vilademat is a small municipality in the Alt Empordà comarca of Girona, Catalonia, with a population that has rarely exceeded a few hundred. During the Spanish Civil War, hundreds of Catalan municipalities — including the smallest — issued their own emergency paper currency under the authority of local councils, the ajuntaments, when the collapse of normal coin supply made daily commerce impossible. At reference Turró 2772, this is one of the more obscure municipal emissions. Notes from villages this size typically survived in very small quantities; many were never redeemed after the Nationalist victory ended Republican local authority in early 1939.
