Viella — the administrative capital of the Val d'Aran in the Pyrenees — issued local emergency notes during the Spanish Civil War when the Republican government's centralized currency supply broke down and small-denomination coins disappeared from circulation almost entirely. Municipalities across Catalonia and Aragon stepped in with their own printed or handstamped scrip, collectively called "guerra civil local issues." The Ajuntament de Vielha was among the smaller issuing bodies, and its output was correspondingly limited.
Turró catalogues only a handful of Vielha types. Low surviving populations are typical of these tiny municipal runs — most were redeemed, defaced, or simply lost when the Nationalist advance rendered them worthless in 1938.
