One of thousands of local emergency issues produced across Republican Catalonia during the Civil War, when the collapse of small-denomination coinage forced municipal governments to print their own scrip. Torroella de Montgrí, a small town in the Baix Empordà comarca, authorized this note under the three-signature framework — alcalde, interventor, and dipositari — that the Generalitat encouraged to establish a minimum of financial accountability in what was otherwise a chaotic patchwork of local currencies.
Turró catalogued over 2,500 distinct Catalan Civil War emissions; at #2563, this sits near the upper end of that count, reflecting just how many municipalities entered the printing business between 1936 and 1939.
