| Additional information |
Torres de Segre is a small municipality in the Lleida province of Catalonia, and this cardboard piece is one of hundreds of locally issued emergency currencies — moneda de necessitat — that proliferated across the Republican zone after the military uprising of July 1936 drained metallic coinage from circulation almost overnight. Hoarding, requisitioning, and the collapse of normal supply chains left municipalities with no practical alternative but to print their own.
At 39 mm, this is unusually large for a cardboard fractional. The Turró catalog documents significant variation in paper stock and print quality across known specimens.
