Tiurana was a small municipality in the comarca of La Noguera, Lleida, Catalonia. Like hundreds of other Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency after the Republican government's decree of September 1936 effectively endorsed local money creation to address the catastrophic shortage of small coin. The Ajuntament's authorization to print was often little more than a rubber stamp and a town council vote.
Turró catalogues over 2,700 such local emissions from Catalonia alone. Tiurana's survival rate is predictably low — the town's entire pre-war population numbered in the hundreds.
