| Obverse description | The note is printed in black letterpress on a bluish ground with a geometric border framing the entire design. The municipal coat of arms of Tarragona is positioned at left, balanced by the principal text block at centre and right. Dated 18 May 1937, the overall layout is austere and utilitarian, consistent with wartime emergency municipal issues. |

During the Spanish Civil War, the collapse of small-change circulation prompted hundreds of Catalan municipalities to issue their own emergency fractional currency — billetes de necesidad. Tarragona's series was produced locally by Imprenta Sugrañes, a commercial print shop pressed into monetary service, which gives the notes an artisanal quality entirely absent from centrally issued wartime paper.
Turró catalogues this as #2435. The municipality's authority to issue extended only as long as Republican administration held the region — Tarragona fell to Nationalist forces in January 1939, rendering the entire local emission worthless overnight.
