During the Spanish Civil War, dozens of municipalities and local institutions issued their own emergency paper currency — the so-called billetes de necesidad — to combat the chronic shortage of small-denomination coinage. Sigüenza, a small cathedral city in Guadalajara province, changed hands violently in 1936 and remained a contested zone. This note, issued by the local agricultural savings institution, was a practical stopgap rather than any formal monetary instrument.
The Gari Montenegro reference number is unassigned, which typically indicates the note was documented too late or in insufficient quantity to receive a full catalog entry — a common situation for hyper-local wartime issues from Castile.
