Segarra de Gaià is a small municipality in Tarragona province, and like dozens of Catalan and Valencian towns during the Spanish Civil War, it issued its own emergency coinage in 1937 when the Republican government's currency supply collapsed at the local level. The central Republican authorities had authorized municipalities to produce token coinage — moneda local — to keep small transactions moving as silver and copper disappeared from circulation.
Brass was the practical choice by this stage of the war; strategic metals were being diverted, and towns used whatever stock was available.
