Sindicat Agrícola de Santes Creus was one of hundreds of Catalan agricultural cooperatives and trade unions that issued emergency fractional currency during 1936–37, after the Republican government's chronic shortage of small-denomination coinage left rural commerce effectively paralyzed. These locally issued vales and bitllets were technically illegal under central Republican monetary law but were tolerated — and in practice, necessary — throughout the anarchist and collectivist-controlled zones of Catalonia.
The Gari Mon catalogue reference places this firmly within the documented Catalan Civil War local emission series. Thick paper stock was common among inland Catalan issuers who lacked access to specialist banknote suppliers.
