Riells del Montseny is a small municipality in the Vallès Oriental comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of similarly sized towns it issued its own emergency paper currency during the Civil War after the Republican government authorized local bodies to produce small-denomination notes to address the acute shortage of coin. The Turró catalog documents thousands of these emissions — Turró 2118 places this note within a well-documented but sprawling series of Catalan municipal issues, most produced on whatever printing resources were locally available.
Survival rates for these small-town emissions vary wildly. Some municipalities printed very limited runs; others were more prolific. Riells del Montseny's issues are not among the rarest, but they are not common either.
