Issued by the local branch of the U.G.T. during the Civil War, this is a piece of wartime municipal emergency currency — the sort of scrip that proliferated across Republican-held Catalonia after the banking system effectively collapsed under the strain of mobilization and hoarding. The U.G.T. in Poliñá (now Polinyà, north of Barcelona) produced these notes to keep local commerce moving when small-denomination coinage had vanished entirely from circulation.

The thick card stock was a practical choice: thinner paper degraded quickly in everyday exchange, and these notes were expected to function as coins, not banknotes. Turró catalogues this specific issue under his Paper Moneda de la Guerra Civil series, and the Gari reference confirms its local scarcity.
