Picaña is a small municipality in the Valencia province, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, its local council issued emergency paper scrip when the Republican government's coin supply collapsed under wartime hoarding and metal requisitioning. These municipal emissions — locally called "moneda local" or "papel moneda municipal" — were technically illegal under central Republican monetary law but were tolerated out of necessity from 1936 onward.
The Turró and Gari references confirm this as a catalogued piece, but Picaña's issues remain genuinely scarce given the tiny population the scrip was intended to serve.
