Llorenç de Morunys is a small mountain municipality in the Solsonès comarca of inland Catalonia, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, it resorted to issuing its own paper money when the Republic's supply of small-denomination coinage effectively collapsed in 1937. The Consell de la Generalitat had authorized local emergency currency that year, and printers across the region — Imprenta Boixeda among them — were kept busy filling orders from municipalities that had no other practical means of conducting daily commerce.
Boixeda operated out of Manresa, which became something of a regional hub for this kind of municipal emergency printing work during the war years.
