Montferri is a village in the Alt Camp comarca of Tarragona province with a population that barely exceeded a few hundred during the 1930s. Like hundreds of other small Catalan municipalities during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency paper currency in 1937 when Republican Spain's central supply of coin collapsed and local commerce ground to a halt without small-denomination change. These municipal emissions — collectively catalogued in the thousands across Catalonia — were authorized under the Generalitat and printed by whatever local press was available.
Imprenta Solé in Tarragona handled a significant volume of these small-town issues from the surrounding province, making them one of the more recognizable printers in the Turró catalog for this region.
