Les Borges Blanques is a small agricultural town in the Garrigues comarca of Lleida, and its local currency note is a product of the Spanish Civil War's remarkable experiment in municipal emergency money. When the banking system fragmented after the July 1936 coup, hundreds of Catalan towns issued their own moneda local to keep daily commerce moving — the Ajuntament here acting as de facto monetary authority by necessity rather than design.
Grafos was a Barcelona printing house collectivized under CNT-FAI control during the war, which makes the printer's imprint itself a piece of political history. Notes from this press often show inconsistent ink saturation, a known production characteristic rather than damage.
