During the Spanish Civil War, the CNT-UGT labor union jointly administered much of the Catalan interior after the collapse of Republican state authority in mid-1936. La Seu d'Urgell — the small Pyrenean bishopric seat better known internationally as co-sovereign of Andorra — issued its own emergency fractional currency because coin had vanished entirely from circulation, hoarded or melted within months of the war's outbreak.
The Imprenta Unió Obrera was the union's own print shop, which kept production entirely local. AL#3633 is among the more geographically specific of the thousands of Republican municipal and syndical issues from this period — few came from towns this small or this close to the French border.
