The Consell Municipal de Girona issued this replica in 2003 as part of a broader Spanish civic interest in documenting the emergency paper money — known as moneda local — produced by Catalan municipalities during the Civil War years of 1936–1939, when the breakdown of normal currency supply forced local authorities to print their own. The original Girona peseta belonged to that improvised wartime series.
Printed by the FNMT in Madrid — the same institution responsible for Spain's official currency production — the replica carries a watermark, a security feature the originals almost certainly lacked.
